Baby Done (15) (2021)

Executive produced by Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Jojo Rabbit) and directed and scripted respectively by husband and wife team Curtis Vowell and Sophie Henderson, Baby Done is a pleasingly deadpan, tremendously charming romantic comedy about one couple’s response to imminent parenthood.

When awkward New Zealander Zoe (Edinburgh Comedy Award winner comedian Rose Matafeo) and her sensitive British boyfriend Tim (Matthew Lewis, Neville from the Harry Potter series) find out they are having a baby, they resolve to not let parenthood change them – yet almost immediately, it does. While Tim goes into hyper-anxious dad mode, Zoe throws herself into realising some of their wildest dreams before the baby arrives, with her increasing denial about the birth pushing her, and their relationship, to the limit.

Powered by Matafeo’s amiable, engaging performance and her laid-back chemistry with the equally likeable Lewis, Baby Done is sharply scripted and elicits both laughs and feeling as it moves confidently between comedy and drama, following a couple whose specific path to parenthood flips typical gender roles on their heads.

This is a really well-observed, occasionally quite silly comedy that nails a lot of the key insecurities parenthood brings with it. The main reason I recommend it is for Rose Matafeo’s brilliant performance – she is funny, relatable and on this evidence deserves to be a star.” – Paul Gallagher, GFT Programme Manager
